Champagne Gosset-Epernay

The sun poured through the glass roof of the Gare de l’Est as I waited for the early morning non-stop to Reims.  One hour later my fellow journalists and I were met by Philippe Manfredini, the international sales director for Maison GOSSET, who delivered a fascinating running commentary as our luxurious bus motored to Epernay and a tour of Champagne Gosset.

Once we arrived in Epernay it was just a short drive along the Avenue de Champagne, home to Pol Roger, Moet & Chandon, Perrier-Jouet and many other internationally known brands, before arriving at our destination.

Founded in 1584 Maison Gosset was acquired in 1993 by the Cointreau family of Cognac Frapin who has spared no cost in their mission to produce a high quality wine deserving of its reputation.

Our reward was an easier climb up wide staircases to the reception area where our host M. Cointreau was waiting with flutes of a crisp and fresh Grand Blanc de Blancs brut (100% Chardonnay) and then a Celebris Vintage 1998 (64% Chardonnay, 36% Pinot Noir) extra brut that was golden in color with notes of dried fruit and honey.

A final touch of elegance is the distinct packaging for each wine that alerts you that a treat is on its way.

This festive day continued with lunch at the 1-star Michelin restaurant Le Grand Cerf where once seated our flutes were filled with GOSSET Grande Reserve M.V. Small plates of gougères were set before us followed by a silky smooth velouté of pumpkin with almonds topped by a crème with Muscat.

Our flutes were refilled to accompany a flan-like soufflé of Saint-Pierre in a champagne sauce followed by a main course of perfectly rosé slices of porc Ibércio roti served with GOSSET Grand Millésime 2000.

Another round of fresh flutes for the GOSSET Grand Rosé that was a perfect compliment in both color and taste for Vacherin de vanille et framboise.

Café and mignardises signaled the end of a perfect spring day… Not quite-the party continued without alcohol as- we sang our way to the Gare de Reims like students on a high school outing.
