In August 1944 General LeClerc (HauteClocque) marched into Paris, effectively ending the Nazi occupation, and in November 2015 his great nephew, Jean, opened this charming restaurant.
Just off the Champs Elysées, La Haute Cloche, featuring prix fixe menus 28 euros (2 courses) and 34 euros (3 courses) that change daily, is a canteen for local business people by day. and travelers from the neighboring 4-star hotels in the evenings.
We selected a 2015 Petit Chablis from La Chablisienne and M began with Chef Louis CASANOVA's thick velouté of butternut squash with a subtle hint of chestnut.
I opted for a terrine of Scotch salmon with fresh herbs.
To accompany our main courses Jean poured a 2012 Bordeaux from La Clarendelle that lit up M's face. Our meat was from the Limousin– onglet with fries for M and rognons de veau (beef kidneys) sauce balsamique with purée maison for me. They were perfectly cooked, with a slightly pink center and cushiony to the touch of my fork.
We shared today's crumble of Granny Smith apples topped with vanilla ice cream. Chef Louis joined us, followed by his #2, Fabio from Toscano, who made espresso for the four of us.
Compliments were shared in French, Italian, German and American.
La Haute Cloche features the basics of a cozy Parisian bistro: a warm welcome, good wines at reasonable prices, and simple, uncomplicated food using the freshest of products.
