Angela, my Petaluma girlfriend was in town for her annual visit, and as is customary I took her to lunch to celebrate her 89th. My selection, LES NOCES de JEANNETTE. This 100 year old restaurant was named for Victor Massé's operetta.
Owner Patrick Fracheboud had been alerted and coupes de champagne were immediately served. Crisp and bubbly.
We worked off the 29 euros Menu (entrée, plat, dessert.) For both of us, six succulent, garlicky escargot from France. served with a white Sancerre from Domaine Gérard Boulay from master sommelier Patrick's excellent cave.
Angela opted for magret de canard au cassis with a roasted pear and I, having seen my neighbor devour a pavé de rumsteak copied her with pleasure. Patrick chose a 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape from Thomas Perrin for our meat.
On to dessert, and once again we chose the same item: Pain perdu au miel, glace crème de lait bouilli, French Toast as you've never had it.
And now it was time for Patrick to join us for coffe and the final glasses of a Vieille Prune from Burgundy-smooth and bracing without the fire of inferior products.
