Julien was born in southwest France, spent his childhood in Martinique and worked for four years in London in the financial world but it was time to get back to France and his roots. Back home he had the good fortune to meet his his wife, Laura, whom I described as lovely but was corrected: “Magnifique!“–I predict a long marriage.
Looking to capture the casual atmosphere of a London pub without the warm beer and loud sporting events on massive TV screens he brought Joseph to work the ovens and create an appropriately Anglo-French menu. Raised in Manchester he was most recently at Jadis in the 15th arrondissement and he brings refinement to his creations.
In addition to the 60 seat restaurant the bar area serves craft beers and British snacks like Scotch Eggs, a 4-minute egg wrapped in ham, rolled in bread crumbs then fried and fish fingers in a tart brown sauce. A good spot for a post-work or pre-dinner pause.
I enjoyed them before starting my meal with a moist confit of beef cheeks with rosemary and chopped house pickles. A 2012 red from Pigeoulet des Brunier in the Vaucluse was a good choice at 6 euros per glass.
They were sold out of Beef Wellington so I opted for a crunchy Roast Quail with kale and creamy potatoes. Julien surprised me with a 2012 white Coteaux de Languedoc from Valflaunès that worked very well with the bird.
The French pastry chef created a refreshing Sablé au thé, mousse caramel & sorbet de yaourt au romarin.
